Des Moines Register Article: Iowan Makes Tainted Water Fit to Drink

The Des Moines Register wrote:

"We were going to give everything we had or nothing at all," Hays said.

"...(John) Hays and his wife, Mary, took $40,000 from their savings. They used $10,000 to apply for a patent, which is pending, and spent the rest to build chlorinators and travel to developing nations.

One trip found them in an African leprosy colony, where Hays put an automatic injection chlorine generator into the colony's water tower. A solar panel on the top of the tower juiced the 12-volt battery that sparks the chlorination. Soon, the colony's doctors had clean surgical tools and 5,000 residents had clean water to drink, Hays said..."
